Goblins from Athena miniatures: 28mm Goblin Miniatures | Fantasy Pewter Wargaming Figures
I love the feel of the weight of real metal minis in my hand,
and Athena Miniatures’ goblins are metal and chunky. After spending some time recently painting resin
3D prints, it’s refreshing to handle pewter. There’s a heft to it. You drop one
of these on the floor and it survives.
These lads trace their lineage back to a Kickstarter by Satanic
Panic Miniatures, where they first appeared under the name Great Gnolls.
That campaign was a love letter to the era. The page had this to say;
“28mm white metal gaming miniatures inspired by the
'Golden Age' of tabletop wargaming – a time before corporate gaming companies
ruled.”
They’ve definitely got the DNA you see in the old FTG
goblins and gnolls. Here’s a couple of examples to show the family resemblance;
One of the things I enjoyed was the options for variations in heads and weapons. Here are some pics swiped from the old campaign, to give an idea of what Athena are producing now:
They paint up very nicely. The exaggerated gurning faces are lovely to wash and highlight, and there is just about the right amount of detail for interest, without being excessive.
